August 2025 — At a Glance
August 2025 brought a state education policy from Tamil Nadu, Kerala's declaration as India's first fully digitally-literate state, several freedom-movement centenaries, and a sweep of awards from a Karnataka self-help group's UN honour to a Guinness World Record for Pariksha Pe Charcha.
1. Education & Digital India
Tamil Nadu's State Education Policy 2025
- What — Tamil Nadu launched its own State Education Policy (SEP) 2025 as an alternative to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, drafted by a committee chaired by retired Delhi HC Chief Justice D. Murugesan.
- Key differences from NEP — Retains the two-language policy (Tamil + English) instead of NEP's three-language formula; opposes NEET, favouring state-based admissions; state-level curriculum autonomy.
- Stance — Underscores Tamil Nadu's position that education should remain a Concurrent List subject with adequate space for states.
Kerala declared India's first fully digitally-literate state
- What — CM Pinarayi Vijayan declared Kerala the first fully digitally-literate state in India after the Digi Kerala programme's first phase; 21.87 lakh identified digitally-illiterate people were trained and evaluated.
- Origin — Stemmed from a 2021 local initiative in Pullampara panchayat (Thiruvananthapuram), which hit 96.18% success and became Kerala's first fully digitally-literate panchayat.
- Next step — Digi Kerala 2.0 launched, going beyond basic skills to cyber-fraud awareness and fake-news identification, integrated with KFON's free internet for BPL families.
2. Culture & Heritage
- Kakori Train Robbery centenary — PM paid tribute on the 100th anniversary (9 August 1925) of the raid by Hindustan Republic Association (HRA) members on a train near Kakori (UP), seizing government treasury funds. Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri and Roshan Singh were executed in 1927.
- Vithalbhai Patel — 100 years as first elected Speaker — The All India Speakers' Conference marked 100 years of Vithalbhai Patel (1873-1933, elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel) becoming the first elected Indian President (Speaker) of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925; co-founded the Swaraj Party (1923).
- Pingali Venkayya's birth anniversary — PM paid tribute to Pingali Venkayya (born 2 August 1876), designer of India's National Flag; his 1916 book *Bharatha Deshaniki Oka Jatiya Patakam* proposed a flag with red-and-green bands, later modified by Gandhi to add white (peace) and the spinning wheel.
- Dhirio — Goa's bull-fighting debate — Goa legislators demanded legalising Dhirio (bull-fighting without a matador or ritual killing), an agrarian-festival tradition dating to the Portuguese era, officially banned since a 1997 High Court ruling but still practised in rural Goa.
3. Sports
- National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 — Strengthens the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA)'s independence and testing powers, aligning India's anti-doping framework more closely with WADA norms ahead of major international events.
- Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) — The first-ever edition was held at Dal Lake, Jammu & Kashmir — over 400 athletes from 36 states/UTs competed for 24 gold medals in rowing, kayaking and canoeing; mascot Himalayan Kingfisher, logo a Shikara on Dal Lake.
- Bronco Test for Indian cricketers — BCCI introduced the Bronco fitness test — a shuttle-running endurance test (20m + 40m + 60m runs per set, 5 sets, 1,200 m total without a break) — to ensure high fitness standards among players.
National Sports Day — 29 August 2025
- What — National Sports Day is observed every year on 29 August, marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand (b. 1905).
- Theme — Official theme: 'Sport to Promote Peaceful and Inclusive Societies.' The Fit India Mission ran a parallel three-day (29-31 Aug) campaign themed 'Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Mein' (one hour daily on the sports field).
- Why — The day is also when the Government of India typically confers the National Sports Awards — Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Dhyan Chand Award — to outstanding athletes and coaches.
4. Awards & Achievements
- Equator Initiative Award 2025 — Bibi Fatima Women's Self-Help Group (Dharwad district, Karnataka) — India's sole winner among 10 global winners — bagged this UNDP award (est. 2002, called the 'Nobel Prize for Biodiversity Conservation') for eco-friendly farming and reviving millet-based cropping in ~30 villages.
- National Anubhav Awards 2025 — Marked a decade of the Anubhav portal (launched 2015, DoPPW) recognising retiring government officials' documented experience; the annual awards (started 2016) include 5 Anubhav Awards and 10 Jury Certificates.
