July 2026 — Month at a Glance
Defence and space delivered the month's biggest science headlines — INS Mahendragiri joined the Eastern Fleet, DRDO test-fired the long-range 'Kusha' air-defence missile, and Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 became India's first privately built rocket to reach orbit. Indian Railways ran its first hydrogen train, while the environment ministry moved to notify Western Ghats eco-sensitive zones and draft tougher CAFE-III fuel-efficiency norms. Health regulators cleared India's first dengue vaccine and a first wholly Indian-discovered antibiotic.
1. Defence & Space Technology
INS Mahendragiri and INS Malvan commissioned
- INS Mahendragiri — The Navy commissioned this stealth frigate — 6th of 7 Project 17A frigates, inducted in just 1.5 years — into the Eastern Fleet, Visakhapatnam. Built with 75%+ indigenous content (~6,670 tonnes, 28 knots), carries BrahMos missiles, multifunction radar, anti-submarine and Electronic Warfare systems.
- INS Malvan — Navy's 2nd Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, commissioned at Karwar; built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd with 80%+ indigenous components; detects stealthy diesel-electric submarines in shallow coastal waters. 16 such ASW-SWCs were approved in 2013 (>₹13,000 crore), split between CSL (Mahe-class) and GRSE (Arnala-class).
DRDO's 'Kusha' SAM and Pinaka rocket tests
- Kusha — DRDO conducted the maiden flight test of the indigenous 'Kusha' Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, intercepting a simulated high-speed, high-altitude target; all elements (missiles, radars, command-control) are indigenous. Kusha complements, not replaces, the Russian S-400 Triumf, and builds on last year's IADWS test under Mission Sudarshan Chakra.
- Pinaka — DRDO flight-tested the Pinaka long-range guided rocket from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, validating a minimum strike range of 60 km.
- Astra export — DRDO's Astra Mk1 air-to-air missile was exported to Indonesia (first buyer) during PM Modi's visit — India's counter to the PL-15 missile used by Pakistan and China. *(See Polity & Governance file for the full diplomatic context.)*
Vikram-1: India's first privately built orbital rocket
- What — Skyroot Aerospace (founded 2018, India's first space unicorn) launched Vikram-1 from Sriharikota on its maiden mission 'Aagaman', becoming the first private Indian rocket to reach orbit.
- vs. Vikram-S (2022) — Unlike the earlier Vikram-S (suborbital demonstrator, ~89 km), Vikram-1 is a commercial orbital vehicle for a 450 km LEO, carrying up to 350 kg to LEO (260 kg to SSO), using 3 solid-fuel stages + a restartable liquid-fuel upper stage, an all-carbon composite structure and 3D-printed liquid engines.
- Significance — Makes India the 3rd country after the US and China to demonstrate private orbital-launch capability; payloads included Grahaa Space's SOLARAS CubeSat and Skyroot's in-house SCOPE payload.
SOLVE ground test — a step toward Gaganyaan's crew safety
- What — ISRO ground-tested the SOLVE (Sub-Orbital Launch Vehicle for Experiments) solid motor at Sriharikota — an agile, low-cost testbed simulating atmospheric re-entry to validate the Crew Module's escape, parachute and splashdown systems.
