March 2026 — At a Glance
March 2026's society and culture news was led by sport and literature. India hosted its first-ever national multi-sport event for tribal athletes, the Khelo India Tribal Games in Chhattisgarh, while Tamil lyricist R. Vairamuthu won the Jnanpith Award — India's highest literary honour. Globally, the IOC tightened transgender-eligibility rules for women's events, and a US court held Meta and YouTube liable for addictive platform design. Mizoram celebrated its spring festival Chapchar Kut, and a 16th-century bronze of Saint Thirumangai Alvar was repatriated from a UK museum.
1. Sports
Khelo India Tribal Games — India's first national tribal sports meet
- What — The inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games — India's first national multi-sport event exclusively for tribal athletes — was hosted across Raipur, Jagdalpur and Surguja in Chhattisgarh, with 7 medal sports (athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, wrestling) and demonstration events (mallakhamb, kabaddi).
- Mascot — 'Morveer' — from the Chhattisgarhi words 'Mor' (our own) and 'Veer' (bravery) — symbolises the pride and identity of India's tribal communities.
- Khelo India programme — Joins the roster of Khelo India events — Youth, University, Beach, Para, Winter Games and the Water Sports Festival — aimed at a structured, grassroots-to-elite sporting pipeline.
IOC tightens transgender-eligibility policy for women's events
- What — The International Olympic Committee introduced a policy restricting women's-event participation to "biological females verified by an SRY gene test," effectively excluding transgender and some intersex athletes, effective from the 2028 Olympics — a major shift from its 2021 approach of letting federations set their own rules.
- Rationale & context — Aimed at fairness/safety, citing testosterone's link (via the SRY gene) to greater muscle mass/strength; follows pressure from the US (including a Trump executive order) and controversies like the 2024 Olympics boxing case; World Athletics, FINA, cycling, rugby already impose testosterone-based restrictions.
ASMITA — celebrating women in sport
- What — Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports organised a nationwide athletics league — ASMITA ('Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action', launched 2021) — to celebrate women in sports on International Women's Day, part of Khelo India's gender-neutral mission.
- Details — Focuses on 100m/200m/400m athletics for women aged 14-28 (Under-13, 13-18, 18+ categories); implemented by the Sports Authority of India with My Bharat.
2. Awards & Literature
R. Vairamuthu wins the Jnanpith Award 2025
- What — Tamil lyricist-poet R. Vairamuthu won the Jnanpith Award 2025 — India's highest literary honour, instituted 1961, conferred by the Bharatiya Jnanpith since 1965.
- Significance — Only the 3rd Tamil litterateur so honoured (after Akilan, 1975, and Jayakanthan, 2002), and the first ever for Tamil poetry rather than prose; the award carries ₹11 lakh, a statue of Vagdevi and a citation, conferred only on living Indian citizens writing in a Constitution Eighth-Schedule language or English.

3. Culture & Society
Chapchar Kut and the return of Saint Thirumangai Alvar's statue
- Chapchar Kut — Mizoram's week-long spring festival was celebrated in Aizawl after completion of *jhum* (clearing forest for cultivation); this year's theme — "Zo nun ze mawi – Inremna" (Mizo Ethics – Reconciliation).
- Thirumangai Alvar statue — Oxford's Ashmolean Museum returned a 16th-century bronze statue of Saint Thirumangai Alvar to India — the last of the twelve Alvars (Tamil Vaishnava poet-saints, 8th-9th century CE) and author of the *Periya Tirumoli* (1,084 hymns), part of the *Divya Prabandham*.
World Buddhist Peace Conference 2026 hosted in Hyderabad
- What — Hyderabad hosted the inaugural World Buddhist Peace Conference 2026, bringing ministers, monks, scholars and delegates from 20+ countries to discuss peace, reconciliation and ethical leadership — organised by the Buddhavanam project (Telangana Tourism Development Corporation) with international Buddhist institutions.
Global tech-regulation notes: social-media addiction and child safety
- Meta/YouTube US verdict — A US jury in Los Angeles found Meta and YouTube liable for designing addictive platforms that harmed a young user (anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia), awarding $6 million in damages (Meta 70%, YouTube 30%) — the case succeeded by targeting platform design (feeds, engagement mechanisms) rather than user-generated content, bypassing the usual Section 230 defence.
- India's response — The Union government is weighing a graded regulatory approach for children online — building on the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (parental-consent mandate) and IT Rules, 2021 (age-based content classification, parental locks) — see this month's Polity & Governance lesson for the full framework.
