May 2026 - At a Glance
May 2026 was a Europe-heavy month for Indian diplomacy. PM Modi made a multi-nation swing through the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Italy and the UAE, attended the 3rd India-Nordic Summit at Oslo, and India hosted the 11th Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting. India raised ties with Vietnam to its highest level, held its first-ever multilateral army exercise PRAGATI-2026, and Indian names featured in the International Booker and Pulitzer prizes. In the wider world, a Trump-Xi summit produced an uneasy truce and a West Asia crisis kept the Strait of Hormuz in the headlines.
1. Summits & Conferences
For each summit, fix the host city, the participants, and India's headline outcome.
- 3rd India-Nordic Summit - Oslo, Norway (18-19 May) — Held alongside PM Modi's Norway visit, it brought together the leaders of all five Nordic countries - Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden. It builds on Stockholm (2018, first) and Copenhagen (2022); only India and the US engage the Nordic bloc at summit level.
- 11th Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting - New Delhi (26 May) — EAM S. Jaishankar hosted the foreign ministers of the US (Marco Rubio), Japan (Toshimitsu Motegi) and Australia (Penny Wong). It launched an Indo-Pacific energy-security framework and critical-minerals cooperation, but ended without naming a host or date for the next Quad Leaders' Summit.
- BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting - New Delhi — Held under India's 2026 BRICS chairship at Bharat Mandapam, with foreign ministers of the expanded bloc. No joint statement was issued owing to West Asia tensions; India reiterated a two-state solution and safe maritime flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
- Trump-Xi Summit - Beijing — US President Donald Trump met China's President Xi Jinping in Beijing - the first visit by a sitting US President to China since 2017. Held amid the West Asia crisis, it produced an 'uneasy truce' covering trade, Taiwan and an AI-safety dialogue, plus agreement to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
- India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-IV) postponed — The 4th India-Africa Forum Summit, planned for New Delhi in late May, was postponed by India and the African Union citing an 'evolving health situation' (an Ebola emergency in Africa). The last such summit was IAFS-III in 2015.
