November 2025's History thread — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's 150th birth anniversary, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's 350th martyrdom anniversary and Punjab's new 'holy city' status, the Sirpur and Madurai heritage sites, and the Udupi and Gokarn Partagali Maths' Dvaita Vedanta legacy.
November 2025 — At a Glance
November 2025 carried no dedicated History section in either major monthly digest — but it was rich in genuine anniversaries and heritage news. The nation observed the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Punjab conferred 'holy city' status on three towns tied to Sikh history, Chhattisgarh's Sirpur archaeological site moved closer to a UNESCO World Heritage tag, and the Prime Minister's visits to Udupi and Goa put two 13th-century Dvaita Vedanta institutions in the news.
1. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — 150th Birth Anniversary
The Prime Minister paid tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birth anniversary — an occasion the Statue of Unity's Museum of Royal Kingdoms of India (inaugurated this same November) was itself built to honour: his integration of India's princely states.
Early life and the freedom struggle
- Birth — Born 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat; his father Jhaberbhai had served in Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi's army during the Revolt of 1857. Patel qualified as a barrister in England and set up legal practice in Ahmedabad in 1913.
- Kheda Satyagraha (1918) — His political journey with Gandhi began here — leading famine-hit Kheda peasants in refusing to pay taxes, his first major victory against colonial authorities.
- Bardoli Satyagraha (1928) — Led Bardoli's landowners in resisting a tax hike; his leadership here earned him the title 'Sardar' (leader) and elevated him to national prominence.
- Constitutional roles — Elected to the Constituent Assembly from Bombay; served as Chairman of the Provincial Constitution Committee and member of the Advisory Committee on Fundamental Rights, Minorities and Tribal and Excluded Areas.
'Iron Man of India' — integrating over 560 princely states
- The task — As independent India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel was tasked with unifying over 560 princely states — covering nearly 40% of India's territory and population — into the Union, using a combination of diplomatic negotiation, persuasion and, where necessary, firm administrative measures.
- Junagadh, Kashmir, Hyderabad — Junagadh was integrated in 1948 after a plebiscite favoured India; Kashmir's Raja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession in 1947; Hyderabad was absorbed in 1948 after Operation Polo, conducted under Patel's guidance.
- 'Steel frame of India' — Envisioned the All India Services as a 'steel frame' of officers serving with integrity and honesty; also led Gujarat's cooperative movement, helping form the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union.
- Legacy — Died 15 December 1950; awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1991. The Statue of Unity (2018, Kevadia, Gujarat) and the annual Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative (launched 2015, on his 140th birth anniversary) both honour his vision of a united India.
2. Sikh History & Heritage in the News
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji — 350th martyrdom anniversary
- Who — Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji (1621-1675), the 9th Sikh Guru, was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Ji (the 6th Guru) and was born in Amritsar, Punjab. 24 November 2025 marked the 350th anniversary of his martyrdom.
- Founding Anandpur Sahib — He founded the town of Chak Nanki in Punjab, which was later enlarged into the city of Shri Anandpur Sahib — a site that this same November received Punjab's new 'holy city' status.
- 'Hind Di Chadar' — Crowned with the honour 'Hind Di Chadar' ('Shield of India') for defending religious freedom; he propagated universal brotherhood, and his hymns — stressing equality, peace and courage — feature in the Guru Granth Sahib.
Punjab confers 'holy city' status — and the Five Takhts
- What — The Punjab government passed a resolution according 'holy city' status to Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and Amritsar Walled City — sites that together host three of Sikhism's five Takhts. Key provisions ban the sale and consumption of liquor, meat, tobacco and other intoxicants in these areas.
- About the Takhts — A Takht (throne) is a seat of spiritual and temporal authority in Sikhism — the 'Panj Takht' are its five most important seats of power, issuing religious decrees and addressing community issues.
- The Five Takhts — Akal Takht (Amritsar, 1609, Guru Hargobind); Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa Panth in 1699); Takht Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, where Guru Gobind Singh finalised the compilation of the Guru Granth Sahib); Takht Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib (Patna, Guru Gobind Singh's birthplace); Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib (Nanded, Maharashtra, Guru Gobind Singh's final resting place).
3. Archaeology & Ancient Capitals in the News
Sirpur, Chhattisgarh — towards a UNESCO tag
- What — The Sirpur archaeological site — also known as Shripur/Sripura, on the banks of the River Mahanadi — is being upgraded to secure a UNESCO World Heritage tag. First discovered in 1882 by Alexander Cunningham, a British army engineer who became the first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1871.
- A multi-religious centre — A 5th-12th century multi-religious urban centre with 22 Shiva temples, 5 Vishnu temples, 10 Buddhist viharas and 3 Jain viharas. It was a major Buddhist centre — the Tivaradeva Mahavihara monastery houses a significant Buddha statue.
- Lakshmana Temple & capital status — The Lakshmana Temple (dedicated to Vishnu, built around the 7th century) is one of India's finest brick temples. Sirpur was the capital of Dakshina Kosala under the Panduvanshi and later Somavamshi kings — an example of early-medieval urban planning.
Madurai, Tamil Nadu — the ancient Pandyan capital
- The occasion — Madurai hosted the 2025 Men's FIH Hockey Junior World Cup. Known as 'The City that Never Sleeps', it is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.
- Ancient capital — Madurai served as the capital of the ancient Pandyan Kingdom — one of the three great Tamil dynasties (with the Cholas and Cheras) — from the 6th century BCE to the 16th century CE.
4. Historic Religious Institutions in the News
Udupi Sri Krishna Matha — the seat of Dvaita Vedanta
- The occasion — The Prime Minister visited the Sri Krishna Matha in Udupi, Karnataka, in connection with the legacy of Jagadguru Madhvacharya — founder of the Matha's Dvaita philosophy. Udupi is often called the 'Temple City' and the 'Mathura of South India'.
- The Matha — Founded in the 13th century by the Vaishnavite saint-philosopher Sri Madhvacharya, who was the proponent of the Dvaita (Dualism) school of Vedanta philosophy; its central deity is a form of Lord Krishna known as Bala Krishna (infant Krishna).
Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math, Goa — 550 years
- The occasion — The Prime Minister unveiled a 77-foot bronze Lord Ram statue at the Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math in Goa. The Math also follows the Dvaita school of Vedanta established by Jagadguru Madhvacharya in the 13th century.
- Legacy — Considered the first Gowd Saraswat Brahmin Vaishnava Math and has historically served as the emblem of Saraswat identity; the Math has recently marked its 550th-year celebration (Sardha Panchashatamanotsava).
