April 2026 — Month at a Glance
April 2026 brought India a statistical blow — the IMF's latest World Economic Outlook showed India slipping from the world's 4th to its 6th-largest economy — alongside genuine wins: a landmark, women-led Free Trade Agreement with New Zealand, a record year for defence exports, and a major reform of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code's liquidation framework. POSHAN Abhiyaan completed eight years with a mixed report card on child nutrition, while the RBI, SEBI and IRDAI all pushed new rules on digital fraud, bad-loan classification and insurance accounting. Below is the exam-ready, point-wise version of every economic and infrastructure story of the month.
1. India's Global Economic Standing
India slips to the world's 6th-largest economy
- What — IMF's World Economic Outlook (WEO) shows India no longer the 4th-largest economy. 2026 GDP projected at 4.15 trillion (up from 3.92 tn in 2025), behind Japan (4.38 tn) and the UK (4.27 tn) — pushing India to 6th position globally.
- Why the slip — Mainly statistical: in February 2026 India revised its GDP base year, cutting 2025-26 GDP from ₹357 to ₹345 lakh crore (4.1 → 3.9 tn), while rupee depreciation against the dollar widened the gap further.
- Outlook — India had overtaken the UK for 5th place in 2022; IMF projects India will retake 4th place in 2027 and overtake Germany for 3rd by 2031.
Global GDP landscape — 2026 projections (IMF WEO)| Rank | Country | GDP (2026, projected) |
|---|
| 1 | United States | $32.38 trillion |
| 2 | China | $20.85 trillion |
| 3 | Germany | ~$4.5 trillion |
| 4 | Japan | $4.38 trillion |
| 5 | United Kingdom | $4.27 trillion |
| 6 | India | $4.15 trillion |
2. Trade, Flagship Schemes & Defence Exports
India-New Zealand FTA — India's first women-led trade pact
- What — India signed an FTA with New Zealand (after its UK and EU pacts); New Zealand agreed to immediately eliminate tariffs on all Indian products (currently up to 10%), benefiting garments, carpets, footwear and gems & jewellery.
- Women-led first — Nearly the entire negotiating team — Chief Negotiator, Deputy Chief Negotiator, sectoral leads, and India's Ambassador to New Zealand — comprised women.
- Agriculture ring-fenced — India excluded sensitive agri-products (dairy, onions, chana, peas, corn, almonds, sugar) from tariff concessions, protecting farmer/fisher interests.
- Mobility & investment — No caps on Indian students; post-study work rights up to 3 years (STEM) / 4 years (doctoral); 5,000-strong Temporary Employment Entry Visa; 1,000/year Working Holiday Visa; NZ pledged $20 billion investment over 15 years.
- Bilateral snapshot — Total 2023-24 trade: US$1.75 billion; India is NZ's 2nd-largest source of international students (~8,000 Indian students); diaspora ~2.92 lakh persons.
POSHAN Abhiyaan — eight years of India's nutrition mission
- What — POSHAN Abhiyaan (Prime Minister's Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition), launched 8 March 2018, is India's flagship multi-ministerial mission to improve nutrition for children (0-6 yrs), pregnant/lactating mothers and adolescent girls.
- Evolution — Built on ICDS (1975), PMMVY (2017); Mission POSHAN 2.0 (2021-22) integrated it with Anganwadi Services and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls, adding SAM/MAM management and AYUSH-based wellness.
- Scale & tools — ~14 lakh Anganwadi centres, ~9 crore beneficiaries; Poshan Tracker (2021) for real-time monitoring; Poshan Helpline (1515) for grievances.
- Progress vs. gaps — NFHS-5 (2019-21): stunting fell only 38.4% → 35.5%, while anaemia in children rose 58.6% → 67.1% — showing slow, uneven progress despite massive coverage.
India's defence exports hit a record high
- What — The Ministry of Defence announced a record ₹38,424 crore in defence exports for FY 2025-26, up ₹14,802 crore (62.66%) from ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25 — nearly threefold growth in five years.
- Sector split — DPSUs contributed 54.84% (₹21,071 crore, growing a sharp 151%); the private sector contributed 45.16% (₹17,353 crore, growing 14%).
- Reach — Exports now reach 80+ countries; number of exporters rose from 128 to 145 (13.3% increase).
Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code — liquidation framework overhauled
- What — The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2026 reforms the liquidation framework under the IBC, 2016 — aiming to speed up asset sales, improve creditor recovery rates, and reduce litigation delays in stalled liquidations.
Ind AS Framework mandated for all insurers
- What — IRDAI issued an exposure draft requiring all insurers (life, general, health, reinsurance) to adopt Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) from 1 April 2026, aligning with global IFRS norms.
- Key change — Shifts asset/liability valuation from historical cost to market-consistent valuation, with insurers required to run dual reporting (existing GAAP + Ind AS) during transition.
