July 2026 — At a Glance
July 2026 in Andhra Pradesh combined memory, heritage and women's enterprise. The 129th birth anniversary of Alluri Sitarama Raju — 'Manyam Veerudu' — was celebrated at his birthplace Pandrangi (Padmanabham mandal, Visakhapatnam district). The Union Ministry of Culture released ₹5 crore under the Museum Grant Scheme for a new building for the Andhra Sahitya Parishad Government Museum and Research Institute, Kakinada, home to nearly 5,000 palm-leaf manuscripts. Telugu cinema won big at the 72nd National Film Awards, and the Rural Poverty Alleviation Department announced 'Swayam AP', a State brand for women Self-Help Group products launching on 1 August 2026.
1. History — Alluri Sitarama Raju's 129th Birth Anniversary
Remembering Manyam Veerudu, the 'Hero of the Jungle'
- The event — The 129th birth anniversary was celebrated at Pandrangi village, Padmanabham mandal, Visakhapatnam district. It began at Veerula Udyanavanam with floral tributes at his statue, followed by a National Flag rally from his ancestral house and folk performances on his life.
- Early life — Born at Pandrangi; birth commonly associated with 4 July 1897 (some accounts say 1898). From a Telugu-speaking Kshatriya family, he came into close contact with the tribal communities of the Eastern Ghats.
- Why tribals resisted — They practised podu (shifting) cultivation. The Madras Forest Act, 1882 restricted their movement and access to forests and minor forest produce, pushing many into low-wage labour.
- The rebellion — He led the Rampa Rebellion (Manyam Rebellion), 1922–1924, using guerrilla warfare — ambushes, raids, hit-and-run attacks and attacks on police stations and outposts — against British forest laws, forced labour and exploitation.
- Death — Captured and killed by British forces at Koyyuru village on 7 May 1924, which ended the rebellion.
- Honours — A postal stamp in 1986; the biographical film Alluri Seetharama Raju (1974).
2. Heritage — ₹5 Crore for Kakinada's Palm-Leaf Manuscript Museum
- What — The Ministry of Culture released ₹5 crore under the Museum Grant Scheme for a new building for the Andhra Sahitya Parishad Government Museum and Research Institute, Kakinada.
