Andhra Pradesh's June 2026 science and environment digest — ground broken for Google's 1 GW Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, the State's first Google AI Lab at Vignan's University, rapid Ganoderma detection from ICAR-IIOPR Pedavegi, Central support for a Clean Godavari mission before the Pushkarams, hypoxia behind 11 tonnes of dead fish at Boyapadu, and a fatal fire at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
June 2026 — At a Glance
June 2026 in Andhra Pradesh's science and environment news combined digital infrastructure with ecological warnings. Google and the State broke ground for the Google Cloud India AI Hub — a 1 GW hyperscale AI data centre — in Visakhapatnam, and AP's first Google AI Lab opened at Vignan's University, Vadlamudi. ICAR-IIOPR licensed its rapid Ganoderma test to Patanjali Foods, and the Centre backed a Clean Godavari mission modelled on Namami Gange. On the other side, hypoxia likely killed about 11 tonnes of fish at Boyapadu (Anakapalli), and a fire at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant claimed eight lives.
1. Digital Infrastructure — Google Cloud India AI Hub, Visakhapatnam
A 1 GW hyperscale data centre and an eastern subsea-cable gateway
- What — Google and the AP government broke ground for the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, developed with partners AdaniConneX and Airtel Nxtra.
- Components — A 1 GW hyperscale AI data centre, high-performance computing, international subsea cable connectivity, and cloud and AI services.
- Hyperscale data centre — A very large facility that stores and processes huge volumes of data for cloud computing, AI, machine learning and internet services.
- America-India Connect — Google's connectivity initiative: a direct fibre-optic path between Vizag and Chennai, linked to routes towards South Africa and the United States.
- Strategic value — Makes Vizag a digital gateway on the eastern seaboard and gives an alternative to western-coast cable routes through sensitive zones such as the Red Sea.
Concerns raised about the project| Concern | Detail |
|---|
| Power | Around 1 GW demand could strain the local grid; solar and wind are intermittent, so backup is needed |
| Water | More than 2 million litres per day per 100 MW — nearly 20 million litres per day for 1 GW — in a district that faces summer water stress |
| Environment | Groundwater stress, diesel-backup air pollution, heat and land pressure |
| Data sovereignty & lock-in | Dependence on one foreign cloud provider |
| Process | Rights groups say a full environmental impact assessment and public hearings may have been avoided |
2. AP's First Google AI Lab — Vignan's University, Guntur
Hands-on Generative and Agentic AI for students and faculty
- What — Andhra Pradesh's first Google AI Lab was inaugurated at the Vadlamudi campus of Vignan's University in Guntur district.
- Inaugurated by — Navisha Prabhakar, Google Cloud Regional Head (Education).
- Set up by — The Department of Advanced Computer Science and Engineering in collaboration with Gemini Enterprise for Education.
- Gemini Enterprise for Education — An AI platform giving exposure to Generative AI, AI-based research support, data analysis, automation and Agentic AI systems.
- Purpose — AI learning, research projects, industry-linked training and turning students into technology creators, not just users.
3. Agri-Research — IIOPR–Patanjali Foods MoU on Ganoderma Detection
Catching basal stem rot before symptoms appear
- What — ICAR's Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research (IIOPR) signed an MoU with Patanjali Foods to use its technology for rapid detection of Ganoderma disease in oil palm plantations.
- Why it matters — The test identifies infected palms before severe symptoms appear, allowing timely management and preventing spread.
- IIOPR — Located at Pedavegi village, near Eluru city, Eluru district; works on oil palm productivity and disease management, supporting India's edible-oil security.
- Ganoderma — A disease caused by the fungus Ganoderma; it causes Basal Stem Rot, which attacks the lower stem and can reduce yield or kill the palm.
- Significance — Technology transfer from a research institute to industry and farmers — a public-private partnership in agriculture.
4. Environment — Clean Godavari Mission and Wildlife Proposals
Central support ahead of the Godavari Pushkarams
- What — The Union government assured support for a proposed Clean Godavari programme on the lines of Namami Gange, and agreed to send a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) team to assess pollution before the next Godavari Pushkarams.
- Who sought it — Deputy CM K. Pawan Kalyan sought Central support for the Mission Godavari Clean Project, targeting untreated sewage, industrial effluents and solid waste.
- Pushkarams theme — "Swachh Godavari, Pavitra Pushkaralu".
- Model panchayats — Support for 260 model panchayats along the Godavari under the Viksit Bharat–Gram Gaurav programme (sanitation, drainage, wastewater).
- Aranyaramam — Approval sought for the Aranyaramam Common Facility Centre — monitoring and command centres for wildlife conservation and forest-fire management.
Wildlife proposals placed before the Centre| Proposal | Detail |
|---|
| Nagarjunasagar–Srisailam Tiger Reserve | Base camps to rise from 90 to 150; jobs for local Chenchu youth |
| Indian Gaurs | Bring 50 gaurs from Madhya Pradesh |
| Female tigers | Bring six female tigers from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh |
| Kumki elephants | Trained kumkis from Odisha for human–elephant conflict in Parvathipuram-Manyam district |
5. Coastal Environment — Hypoxia Behind Mass Fish Deaths at Boyapadu
An algal bloom, oxygen depletion and a near-shore dead zone
- What — A preliminary ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) study said hypoxia (severe oxygen depletion) likely caused mass fish deaths on the Boyapadu coast, Anakapalli district.
- When and where — Reported on June 20, 2026, near the Boyapadu Fish Landing Centre, Nakkapalli mandal; nearly 11 tonnes of fish washed ashore along a 1,500-metre stretch, worth nearly ₹5 lakh.
- Species — About 94% were pony fish (the Leiognathus group); fish reached the shore alive with open mouths and no lesions — signs of respiratory stress.
- Finding — Water samples had a high concentration of Trichodesmium, a cyanobacterium — about 380 cells per millilitre — pointing to a dense algal bloom and possible eutrophication.
- Mechanism — Bloom → algae die and decompose → microbes use up dissolved oxygen → hypoxic/anoxic water; rain and a sudden temperature rise may have stratified the water.
- Industrial angle — Fishermen blamed discharges from nearby bulk-drug industries, but CMFRI said evidence was insufficient to name effluents as the cause; the AP Pollution Control Board is examining it.
6. Industrial Safety — Fatal Fire at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
Molten metal accident in Steel Melting Shop-2
- What — A major fire at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, RINL) killed eight workers and injured six.
- Where — In the CCD section of Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2).
- Likely cause — Buckets carrying hot molten metal reportedly fell from a ladle, causing a sudden surge of molten metal; the exact cause awaits an inquiry.
- PM's ex-gratia — PM Narendra Modi announced from the PMNRF ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for each injured.
- Other responses — Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan conveyed condolences; CM N. Chandrababu Naidu ordered medical care, family support and a detailed inquiry.
