Andhra Pradesh's May 2026 economy digest — a multi-node industrial push led by hyperscale data centres, Carrier Global's cooling-equipment unit at Sri City, a proposed AP–Singapore digital trade corridor, a time-bound plan for 36 irrigation projects with AP's first Water Calendar, MSME parks in every Assembly constituency, and ₹10 lakh collateral-free loans for DWCRA women.
May 2026 — At a Glance
May 2026's economic news from Andhra Pradesh centred on investment-led, spatially spread growth. CM N. Chandrababu Naidu's industrial strategy assigns sector roles to regions — ports, steel and data centres on the coast, manufacturing around Tirupati/Sri City, and defence, drones and space in Rayalaseema. Nara Lokesh laid the foundation for Carrier Global's unit at Sri City and, in Singapore, sought a digital trade corridor and support for the Amaravati Economic Region. At home, the State fixed deadlines for 36 irrigation projects (2026–2028), launched MSME parks towards one in every Assembly constituency, and offered DWCRA women loans of up to ₹10 lakh without collateral.
1. Industrial Strategy — Naidu's Multi-Node Industrial Push
From the Hyderabad agglomeration model to distributed industrial growth
- What — The AP government under N. Chandrababu Naidu is attracting large investments in data centres, steel, renewable energy and manufacturing to make the State a diversified economic hub.
- The shift — The earlier Hyderabad IT-hub model relied on agglomeration economies in one city. After bifurcation AP lost that core and adopted a multi-node strategy, giving regions such as Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Rayalaseema sector-specific roles.
- Digital core — Hyperscale data centres mark a move from IT services to a digital infrastructure economy. Visakhapatnam's coast allows submarine cable landing stations, which carry more than 95% of global internet traffic.
- Power reform — The Deemed DISCOM model lets industries procure electricity through open access and captive generation.
- Investment model — Anchor investments (e.g., hyperscale data centres) are used to trigger ecosystems with forward and backward linkages, relying on FDI and PPPs.
Location-based industrialisation| Region | Assigned sectors |
|---|
| Coastal Andhra | Port-based industries such as steel and data centres |
| Tirupati region (incl. Sri City) | Manufacturing, close to major industrial corridors |
| Rayalaseema | Emerging sectors — defence, drones and space |
2. Digital Infrastructure — Carrier Global at Sri City and the Data-Centre Ecosystem
Building everything a hyperscale data centre needs
- What — Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone for Carrier Global's manufacturing unit at Sri City in Tirupati district and said AP is emerging as a "one-stop hub" for data-centre infrastructure and AI ecosystems.
- What Carrier will make — High-efficiency chillers, industrial cooling systems, precision cooling equipment and HVAC systems for hyperscale computing facilities.
- Chillers — Refrigeration-based systems that remove heat from equipment; essential because AI servers run continuously and overheating damages processors.
- Visakhapatnam as AI/data gateway — Coastal location, land, proximity to submarine cable landing stations, renewable energy corridors and port connectivity. The State targets multi-gigawatt data-centre capacity.
- Sri City — An integrated business city near the AP–Tamil Nadu border on the Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, close to Chennai port, Krishnapatnam and Ennore ports and Chennai airport.
- Naipunyam — An AI-powered conversational skill assessment platform launched by the State for employability testing, digital certification and workforce mapping.
Clusters identified by the State| Cluster |
|---|
| Data centre hub |
| Renewable energy cluster |
| Space city |
| Defence manufacturing zone |
| AC manufacturing cluster |
| Glass manufacturing cluster |
- Corridors — Growth is tied to the Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) and the Visakhapatnam–Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC).
- Vertical vs horizontal integration — Vertical links all production stages (raw material to final assembly) in one ecosystem; horizontal strengthens shared support systems such as skilling, certification, testing and logistics.
3. External Partnerships — AP–Singapore Digital Trade Corridor, AER and MICE
Nara Lokesh at the Joint Implementation Working Committee in Singapore
- Occasion — IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh attended the Joint Implementation Working Committee meeting of the AP and Singapore governments in Singapore.
- Digital trade corridor — He met Gloria Wu, CEO of the Singapore Commodities Intelligence Centre (CIC), and sought a digital trade corridor between Singapore and Visakhapatnam or Krishnapatnam seaport as a pilot, using the CIC blockchain platform for paperless trade, cargo transparency and digital tracking of exports (seafood, agriculture, minerals, pharma, MSME exports).
- Chilli corridor — AP is India's largest aquaculture producer and accounts for 40% to 45% of India's chilli exports. He urged reviving the AP–China chilli trade corridor for Guntur chillies — FPOs to handle procurement and grading; CIC to connect buyers and help with export finance.
- Amaravati Economic Region — An integrated township in Amaravati modelled on Singapore's Punggol district; he sought World Bank support and help from Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry. A Request for Proposal has been issued for the township.
- MICE — Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions — AP is drafting a new MICE policy and will study Singapore's Suntec City model.
- Governance ties — AP and Singapore signed an MoU in November 2025 (Amaravati township, AER, digital transformation, real-time governance). Six AP Ministers attended a week-long training under the Singapore–AP Governance Excellence (SAGE) Initiative.
4. Irrigation — Timeline for 36 Projects by 2028 and the First Water Calendar
A time-bound action plan for 2026–2028
- What — The government prepared a time-bound plan to complete 36 irrigation projects between 2026 and 2028 — 25 pending and 11 newly identified projects, each with deadlines and milestones.
- Water Calendar — Introduced for the first time, it fixes water release dates for major deltas and ayacut regions so farmers can plan sowing, crops, fertiliser and labour.
- Lift irrigation — A 10-year maintenance model for lift irrigation systems is proposed for regular operation and uninterrupted supply.
- Groundwater — The Jaladhara–Jalaharathi programme aims to make groundwater recharge a mass movement.
Important projects and timelines| Project / initiative | Target |
|---|
| Veligonda Project Phase-I | August 2026 |
| Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi Phase-II | October 2026 |
| Polavaram Left Main Canal — water supply to North Andhra | July 2026 |
| Polavaram Project | June–July 2027 |
| Flood protection, river interlinking and lift irrigation works | Up to December 2028 |
- Regional focus — Handri-Neeva is vital for drought-prone Rayalaseema; the Polavaram Left Main Canal serves North Andhra. Polavaram is a multipurpose project on the Godavari.
5. Rural Industrialisation — MSME Parks in Every Assembly Constituency
"One Family – One Entrepreneur"
- What — Minority Welfare Minister N. Md. Farooq laid the foundation stone for an MSME park at Yalluru village, Gospadu mandal, Nandyal district.
